The focal element in this paper is the introduction and investigation of exemplar spaces in Persian painting particularly in the painting school of Herat with a specific emphasis on the works of Kamal Al Din Behzad.  In this school of painting, the avoidance of symmetrical patterns permits the painter to visualize and create various spaces with diverse purposes. In the works of Kamal al Din Behzad, space is two dimensional and has depth; furthermore, it endures both harmony and discord and within each specific space an inimitable and self-regulating event takes place. In this paper, a number of Behzad’s artworks are selected and the distinctive spaces that are created by lines and color enhancements are analyzed; moreover, it is indisputable that such spaces embody explanatory and sentimental aspects. In the works of this school, space and composition are fabricated out of diagonal and circular elements. The paper initiates with an introduction on the school of Herat, next a definition of space is presented and finally selected works of Behzad are elaborated upon. نگارگری ایرانی دارای ویژگی‌های بصری بسیاری است. فضا نیز یکی از ویژگی‌های مهم و درخورِ توجه در این هنر است. هنرمند ایرانی برای خلق این فضا، از تمهیدات بصری گوناگونی بهره‌ جسته است تا به نتیجۀ مورد نظر خود برسد. در این مقاله سعی شده است تا علاوه بر بررسی و معرفی فضای مثالی و چگونگی ایجاد آن، به انواع دیگری از فضا و حضور آن‌ها در مکتب نگارگری «هرات» با تأکید بر منتخبی از آثار کمال‌الدین بهزاد پرداخته شود. در این دوره، اجتناب از قرینه‌سازی محض به نگارگر امکان می‌دهد که فضاهای مختلف را مجسم و تصویر کند. در آثار هنرمندان این دوره از جمله کمال‌الدین بهزاد، فضا، هم دوبعدی است و هم عمق دارد؛ هم یکپارچه است و هم ناپیوسته. هر بخش فضا، مکان وقوع رویدادهای خاص و غالباً مستقل است. در آثار انتخابی، به ایجاد انواع فضا با خطوط و سطوح رنگی‌ که در کنار هم قرار گرفته‌اند و دارای جنبه‌های بیانگرا و عاطفی هستند، اشاره شده است. در آثار این دوره، فضا و ترکیب‌بندی‌هایی متشکل از عناصر مورب و دایره‌وار دیده می‌شود. مباحث با معرفی مکتب هرات و تعریفی کلی از فضا شروع می‌شود و در ادامه به بررسی فضا و انواع آن در آثار انتخابی از بهزاد، می‌پردازد.
