Poets frequently employ literary deviation, diverging from standard norms to enrich their works. This research, conducted through a descriptive-analytical approach using library and documentary methods, investigates the poems of two notable poets—Bijan Elahi and Hamid Mosaddegh—focusing on the elements of deviation as identified by Leech. The study begins by introducing the eight elements of foregrounding and deviation: syntactic, temporal, semantic, lexical, stylistic, orthographic, dialectal, and phonological. It then analyzes these elements within the selected poets' works. The criteria for selection were based on the frequency and prominence of these components in their poetry. Both Bijan Elahi and Hamid Mosaddegh exhibit a deliberate and skillful use of one or more of Leech’s eight elements of deviation, which are distinctly evident in their writing. Specifically, semantic, syntactic, and temporal deviations are more prevalent in their poetry compared to other types. Each of these components is examined individually in the poems of the two poets, with their integration serving to enhance the aesthetic quality of their work and adding an artistic layer to their poetry.
Research Objectives:
To investigate the components of deviation in the poetry of Bijan Elahi and Hamid Mosaddegh and to clarify their artistic significance.
To present the eight elements of foregrounding and deviation and analyze their manifestation in the works of these poets.
Research Questions:
What motivates poets to employ literary deviation?
How do the components of deviation manifest in the poems of Bijan Elahi and Hamid Mosaddegh, and what significance do they hold artistically?
