Abstract
The social development of urban spaces is related to the extent of human use and presence in the space; therefore, enhancing social interactions is one of the most important manifestations of successful urban spaces, through which alone the intangible dimensions of civil life gain the possibility of emergence. However, in the present era, the increasing use of automobiles and the gradual dominance of vehicular movement over pedestrians have reduced the inclination for presence and social participation in urban spaces. This issue, while addressing the importance of social interactions in urban life, raises the necessity of returning to the concept of pedestrian-orientation. Considering the importance of the mentioned issue, the present research is founded on the goal of identifying and evaluating factors influencing the enhancement of social interactions in pedestrian-oriented streets, which has been carried out as a case study on Chaharbagh Abbasi Pedestrian Street in Isfahan. This research is applied in nature and employs a descriptive-analytical method; an attempt has been made to determine the importance of each factor by using expert opinions through enumerating effective criteria and indicators. Consequently, 22 criteria affecting the enhancement of social interactions were identified under three components: physical, social, and activity-functional. Then, using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Expert Choice software, the importance coefficients of the criteria, sub-criteria, and their prioritization were determined. The research population consisted of experts who were randomly selected to answer the questionnaire questions. The research results indicate that among the main criteria, the physical criterion with a weight of 0.31 holds greater importance compared to the other criteria. Among the sub-criteria, visual diversity and permeability from the main physical criterion, with a weight of 0.29, have been allocated the highest importance coefficient in the process of enhancing social interactions from the experts' perspective.
