Abstract
The human need for love and its intrinsic beauty has undoubtedly been one of the fundamental reasons for employing the theme of love in Persian poetry. In this context, we cannot overlook the psychological underpinnings of human inclination toward this subject. This research aims to examine love in the ghazals of Hamidi Shirazi and Houshang Ebtehaj based on Gross's emotion-focused approach, using a descriptive and content analysis methodology. Additionally, the concept of love in the single-page works of Bukhara's lovers is also explored.
The findings indicate that Hamidi's poetry is dominated by a continuous current of love that never abandoned him until the end of his life, while Ebtehaj's poetry maintains an inseparable connection with society, love, nature, and time. In the works of both poets, love is portrayed as a source of profound pain and suffering. Hamidi, through his amorous verses, seeks to enhance his resilience against the sorrow and grief caused by love. Similarly, Ebtehaj's poetic themes revolve around love intertwined with melancholy—as if he, too, turns to poetry to bolster his resilience and escape the sorrows of love.
Hamidi sometimes struggles to regulate his emotional states, to the extent that despair overcomes him. In contrast, Houshang Ebtehaj emerges triumphant in this realm, mastering the emotions arising from love so completely that he attains joy and contentment in love despite its inherent sorrows. In his poetry, during separation from the beloved, Hamidi employs emotion regulation strategies centered on acceptance, attention, and awareness. Ebtehaj’s poetry, meanwhile, exhibits a high degree of psychoanalytic resilience, and his emotion regulation strategies reach such an advanced level that he merges with love’s consequences, embracing and praising it despite all its sorrows and hardships.
