The sun held great value, reverence, and sanctity among ancient peoples, who attributed divinity to it. This esteemed status has caused the symbol of the sun to be used frequently in the literary and artistic works of Iranians. The purpose of writing these lines is to understand the thoughts and beliefs of those peoples regarding this immense celestial phenomenon and to conduct a comparative study of those beliefs in the poetry of Sohrab; therefore, the author first opens a window onto ancient thought and then addresses the persistence of some of those ideas in the poetry of Sohrab Sepehri and the cruciform motif. Sohrab, as a nature-oriented poet who sees the divine manifestation in the phenomena of creation, connects the sun, by virtue of its origin, with the religions of the East. He pays particular attention to the sun (khorshid and aftab), and in this attention, he has cast a favorable eye towards the religions of Mithraism and Buddhism; especially towards Mithra and the lotus. Applying names such as "chariot" (garduneh), "discoverer of the mine of dawn," and "sun bird" (morgh-e aftab) are signs of his attention to the Mithraic and Mazdean religions. In this inquiry, the status of the sun in the ancient religions of Iran and the reflection of those beliefs in the poetry of Sohrab Sepehri and the cruciform motif have been examined using a comparative-analytical method.
